Ways to Get Involved With Marine Biology on Campus

  1. Join the Club- Perhaps the best way to get involved with marine biology is to join the Marine Biology Club! Joining the club is as easy as sending us an email at mbclub@umn.edu to get on our list, attending an event or meeting, or joining our outreach events.
  2. Marine Biology Minor- Although MN is a landlocked state, the U offers a Marine Biology Minor! As a part of the marine biology minor, you will take coursework that will expose you to marine related issues. You will also likely meet many new people interested in the marine sciences. Many of our club members are currently working toward the marine biology minor.
  3. Study Abroad- In addition to classes here on campus, another way to get involved with both the Marine Biology Club and the Marine Biology Minor is to take any one of a number of study abroad options. These options include the two credit Tropical Marine Biology and Shark Ecology field course in the Bahamas, and the two or four credit Coral Reef Ecology sequence in Honduras. Ask any of the club members who went on these trips, and they will tell you that they are life changing!
  4. Research– Another one of the many ways to get involved with the marine biology club and club members is to engage in research at the University. As you may know, the University offers undergraduates two types of research opportunities: directed research and Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). The marine organisms in the Biological Sciences 182 lab offers inspiration for research ideas, as well as easy resources with which to perform experiments. Currently, there are club members actively engaged in research on the Aurelia aurita and Hydractinia symbiodinium (both Cnidarians), but with organisms ranging from the microscopic to vertebrates, the opportunity for research is boundless.
  5. Outreach– The touch tank is a great way to get involved with citizen science and educational outreach. For more information, or to get involved, please visit the Marine Biology Outreach Website.
